Pfizer and BioNTech have already started their application process for full U.S. approval of their Covid-19 vaccine. Rival Moderna is expected to submit for the same process for its shot later this month.

The mRNA vaccines are currently on the U.S. market under Emergency Use Authorizations, which were granted by the Food and Drug Administration in December. Since then, more than 263 million shots have been administered, according to data compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Standard vaccine reviews generally take several months to a year or more to determine whether it is safe and effective for use in the general public. But due to the pandemic, which has killed nearly 600,000 Americans, the FDA permitted the use of the shots under an EUA.

In a public health emergency, the manufacturing and approval of vaccines can be streamlined through emergency authorizations. Former Health Secretary Alex Azar declared a public health emergency on Jan. 31, 2020. The health emergency has been renewed several times, most recently in late April. The FDA allowed the use of the shots with just two months of safety data under an EUA. It’s not the same as a Biologic License Application, or a request for full approval, which requires at least six months of data.

“The way that works is the companies have to submit in this case for a vaccine, a Biologics License Application, and that goes through somewhat more review, obviously than an EUA would,” acting FDA Commissioner Dr. Janet Woodcock said on SiriusXM on April 30. “And there are more manufacturing controls that are standard that are looked at and so forth.”

Full approval will be beneficial to the companies for multiple reasons, former FDA commissioner Dr. Robert Califf told CNBC. For one, it will allow the companies’ vaccines to stay on the market once the pandemic is over and the U.S. is no longer considered in an “emergency,” he said.

It also sets the stage for the companies to begin marketing the shots directly to consumers, he said. Companies can’t promote their products under an EUA, he said.

“The vaccines will still have to be administered under the supervision of a professional who’s qualified,” added Califf, who was the agency’s commissioner under the Obama administration beginning in early 2016. “It’s not like they can send the vaccines to people’s homes. However, they can advertise on TV and promote their products under the watchful eye of the FDA.”

U.S. approval can also have far-reaching impacts beyond the companies who submit the applications, FDA advisors and health policy experts told CNBC.

It could encourage more businesses, universities and other organizations to start requiring people to get the shots, they said, an already controversial move that has impacted millions of students and employees across the U.S. It may also raise confidence in the vaccines and combat vaccine hesitancy, they said.

  4. It is illogical to mandate vaccinations, Cuz current vaccines are only for clinical research purpose or for emergency use, which indicates clearly that they are used in trial phase. Since they are trial vaccines unproved, those who have got vaccinated are out of their voluntary choice, though many evidences have shown the vaccinated are more apt to be infected. The mandated vaccinations, therefore, is unfair and illegal.

    Besides the mandatory vaccination is not ethical. Many clinical doctors have asserted there are other ways to cope with the disease and there are people whose health conditions are not suitable for current FDA unproved vaccines. For example , just as some patients are sensitive to Penicillin, doctors should apply other ways to the case, so some people who are not suitable to take current vaccines should be resorted to other medication. If a patient is sensitive to penicillin and a doctor insists on injecting it into the patient to cause a lethal consequence, it would be an medical accident for which the hospital or the doctor should be responsible. Seeking profit is understandable but fundamental ethics should be prior to it.

  6. My wife is a nurse. She has been a frontline healthcare worker for the entire pandemic in the emergency department. She has saved numerous lives and was always the first one in the room with COVID patients. She exhibited this behavior from DAY ONE.

    This year we were blessed to have her get pregnant. We’ve been trying for years. For this reason, and also that she has easily beaten multiple COVID virus infections (she’s healthy, lean, no bad habits) we decided to not have her get vaccine while being pregnant.

    In the last few months her stellar achievements as a nurse earned her a promotion to an administration position. She is not involved in patient care.

    I came home today to see her in tears. She was pulled into her supervisors office today and pressured to get vaccinated. She made it clear our intentions to remain unvaccinated for the above stated reasons. Her and I wear masks anytime we are outside our home for respect of not having been vaccinated. She is happy to wear a mask full time as work. Nonetheless she is being made an example of. She will now be required to eat lunch alone. She’s not allowed near co workers. Her desk has been moved to a secluded corner.

    We might not be right in our decision to put off being vaccinated while we are in our reproductive years and while she’s pregnant. Does she deserve to be treated like this though? I’ve provided the details, you can decide. That’s how freedom works. You get to decide things for yourself, right or wrong. Personally I’m appalled.

    I’m grateful to have excellent income and we’ve decided to transition her to being a full time mom. She will most likely never work as a Nurse again. All that will remain of her career is the numerous thank you cards and momentos given to her directly from grateful patients whos lives she saved. In any case, God bless everyone, from top to bottom, the good and the bad. I’m praying for us all.
